Dreamers by Yuyi Morales

 


Dreamers written and illustrated by Yuyi Morales is Pura Belpre award winning book about her own immigrant experience when traveling from Mexico to San Franciso, California with her young son.  While traveling they cross a long bridge and when they reach the end, they are immigrants.  On their journey, Yuyi makes many mistakes.  Then she finds a special place, the library.  Here is where they learn the importance of books and how much books fulfill their lives.  Books are how they learned to read, speak, write, and find a voice.  

Dreamers is filled with stunning illustrations which capture the journey of mother and child.  Kids will connect with the fact that Yuyi develops a deep love for picture books.  This is what inspired her to begin writing and illustrating her own picture books.

Let´s Go to the Market is comic style book with lots of Spanish vocabulary.  The main character Little Lobo, a wolf, and his dog, Bernabe, who explore the market to deliver supplies to a variety of vendors.  The sell everything from sweets to sombreros, portraits to pinatas, and carved masks to comic books.  On each page the reader will find Spanish names for each item in the market.  There is also English translation at the bottom of the page when a character speaks Spanish.  Vamos!
